Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy has backed Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s remarks on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, stating that her criticism was justified. Mohamed had posted on X that Sharma is "fat for a sportsman" and "the most unimpressive captain India has ever had." The post, which was later deleted, sparked controversy, with the BJP accusing Congress of body shaming and disrespecting a national sports icon.
Speaking on the matter, Roy stated, "I heard that Rohit Sharma's performance has been quite poor. He scored one century, but other than that, he gets out after scoring 2, 3, 4, or 5 runs. He shouldn't be (on the team). India wins because the other players play well, but the captain doesn't contribute." His remarks added to the ongoing debate about Sharma’s performance and fitness as India’s captain.
The Congress distanced itself from Mohamed’s comments, with party leader Pawan Khera stating that her views did not reflect the party’s position. He confirmed that Mohamed was asked to delete the post and advised to exercise greater caution in the future. Mohamed later clarified that her remarks were "generic" and not intended as body-shaming, emphasizing that sportspersons should maintain a certain level of fitness.
The BJP strongly reacted to the controversy, calling it an insult to a player who has led India to several victories. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticized Congress, questioning whether the party expected Rahul Gandhi to play cricket. The ruling party also highlighted Sharma’s achievements as captain, under whose leadership India won the T20 World Cup, two Asia Cups, and recently secured a 44-run victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy.
Rohit Sharma, who took over as India’s full-time captain in 2023, has led the team in multiple international tournaments and holds a strong record in franchise cricket, having won five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles with Mumbai Indians. Despite recent criticism, he remains one of India’s most experienced players, with a history of match-winning performances across formats. The debate over his fitness and form continues as India prepares for upcoming international fixtures.
